Nessa O’Mahony’s fifth and most recent poetry collection, The Hollow Woman on the Island examines issues of female identity through the prism of O’Mahony’s recent skirmish with ovarian cancer before broadening into a wider exploration of an individual’s relationship with family, community and landscape. Poet John McAuliffe said of it that “O’Mahony’s strongest poems are those in which her confident grasp on family and inheritance are placed in relation to an object and image (like that “wavepolished pebble”) which sets her world in relation to something else, a new idea or frame of reference” whilst Fred Johnston wrote that she “with her precise and musical sense of language and her concern to, well, get it right is one of our better poets. I think it is fair to say that her vigilance interrogates subjects that are genderless and equal.”
