2017 was the 2,000th anniversary of the death of Ovid, whose verse narrative Metamorphoses has proved enduringly popular with readers and writers. To celebrate the anniversary editors Nessa O’Mahony and Paul Munden gathered writers from the northern and southern hemispheres to write poetic responses to this great work. Reviewing it for Text Journal, Linda Weste said that “in its re-envisioning of myth, Metamorphic does not, however, simply amass contemporaneous cultural references. Variously playful, droll or ironic, each of the collection’s poems bring something fresh to the myth they retell. Even the poems that relate more generally to the Metamorphoses – some of which are placed as chapter markers – exude a vitality”.
